The Tudumo Times

A tipping point

The last week has been pretty insane.  Good insane :)

The first sign was one or two extra support queries, and then a mail from one of the long-time Tudumo users with a heads-up about an article from a Very Big Website.

As it turns out, our little gtd software was featured on a blog, The How-To Geek, who has over 30k readers.  That's huge.  Also, check out the review - very nicely written and he goes to a lot of effort with screenshots and explanations.

Then, within no time at all, Tudumo ended up on Lifehacker!  Their scale is nuts.  They have half a million web visits a day, and around 300k subscribers.

That pushed Tudumo into the del.iciou.us "popular" section, which resulted in more traffic than it was getting from Lifehacker.  Also, a couple of download sites (one with 21 million visitors a month) linked to Tudumo and so did the Yahoo directory.  Normally, you have to pay 300 bucks a year to get into Yahoo!  And, if you're interested in web/seo etc, all the attention should do some nice things for PageRank.

So, there were two days of 1000+ downloads a day, tons of visitors, quite a bit of user feedback, and hopefully some improved positioning in Google.  None of it actually my doing, which is the amazing thing about how the web works.

I guess my job is just to keep at the bugs and features, so I'll get back to that!

You're too modest! I think it has EVERYTHING to do with you for developing what is looking like THE desktop GTD ToDo list application.

It's simple, yet powerful. Minimalist in design, with a sort of Web 2.0 look and feel, if that's possible in a desktop client!

Please keep up the good work and try not to get led down the "just add one more thing" route which many ToDo list apps suffer from, ending up bloated and over-complicated.

I've only just downloaded Tudumo but have been looking for a good, non-web ToDo list application and I'm really looking forward to seeing how I get on with Tudumo.

  2. Thanks anonymous - the most often expressed compliment is about the minimalist design, so while there will have to be additions and new features I'll definitely keep it clean!

  3. Why I love this tool: total keyboard support. I'm a programmer, and I like to keep my hands on the keyboard, thank you very much. Tudumo is just a Win+T, Ctrl+N, "Add new feature to project X", Win+T away, and THAT's in my view the most powerful feature of this todo list. I've been previously using MonkeyGTD, which has its own strengths (portable, runs in the browser, can be hosted online) - in fact, I still use it for my home-related Todo stuff, because I can share it between computers. However, Tudumo is now my tool of choice for managing my work-related tasks. Big kudos to you, Richard.

As for the revenue model: given the newly found (and well deserved) popularity of Tudumo, why not get some adsense and see if its generating enough income to keep the tool free? Not to say that I wouldn't buy it, but I imagine that a crippled shareware Tudumo would reach far less people than a freeware Tudumo. Just my two cents on the matter :)

  4. Laur: nowhere NEAR enough traffic to buy lunch once a month, never mind pay for development :) But thanks for the message - it's always great to hear developers are using Tudumo because you're pretty hard to please!

  5. Another developer using Tudumo here and I'm loving it. By far the best I have used so far and I made a point of mentioning it on my blog recently.

    Keep up the good work!
